SUN Microsystems’ invaluable contribution to the Open Source community was also talked upon. Considering that India is among the four countries (others being Brazil, Russia and China) that are under SUN Microsystems’ focus for developing the Open Source technology, it is expected that the developers are the ones benefited the most. Open Source, being totally cost-free and platform independent is a boon for developers and like. According to FSF (Free Software Foundation), SUN Microsystems was at the top in terms of monetary contribution to the Open Source community; its contribution of $400 million being more than three times that of the nearest competitor IBM. SUN Microsystems provide a wide array of project opportunities, Open Source licensing, support for GNU, Linux, Ubuntu, Red Hat operating systems. Also, there are JAVA, Open SPARC (a 32-bit processor), Open Solaris (fully compatible with UNIX etc.), Open Office.org.
JAVA, being a cross-platform language is widely used on all Operating Systems such as MS Windows, Linux, Apple Macs etc.)
Open Office.org is used to maintain .pdf, .doc, .xml, .xls etc. documents in systems running on Solaris.
JAVA User groups on java.net provide members with free tutorials, expert advice, courses, hosting of projects. Since these groups are directly under SUN Microsystems, one can also avail the services of a mentor from SUN Microsystems for guidance and help.
